Class Listening Exercise: Sounds of the Plaster Studio

Sounds:

Lights - high frequency flickering that is somewhat irregular but constant

Pipes - constant and fairly regular sounds of water dripping in pipes echoes through the pipes and exits out of the faucet

Air Purifier - muffled, low frequency sounds of the air purifier from the wood shop creep under the door between the two spaces

I really had to listen hard to hear each of these three sounds. With many other students in the building there was constant noise echoing through the hard walls of Sage and each of my sounds were of equal volume standing in the middle of the room. The lights reminded me of taking a test and noticing all the distracting florescent lights that schools use. The pipes were a tricky one and I literally had to put my head in the sink. I felt like I was underwater and heard sounds muffled and differently. Lastly, the air purifier made a very consistent sound and really felt comfortable yet odd as it came from the floor instead of higher and more level with our ears.

After recording the sounds I noticed more nuances with each of them. For the lights I really could see the electricity flowing. I was able to get the camera up into the recessed lighting and isolate the sound fairly well which helped get focused on the pure sound. The pipes were tricky to get close to and the air purifier was in the next room so it was quite muffled. Overall I felt that I successfully isolated the sounds with minimal background noise.
